So about half a year ago I started reading some stuff up on Dungeons and Dragons, because even though there's a social stigma attached to it, I still thought it was cool and wanted to try it out. I bought the ver 3.5 Player's Handbook, DM guide, and Monster Manual and brought the hefty tomes over to one of my good friends' house. At the time, they were all into Magic: The Gathering, and badly wanted me to play, but I wanted them to give D&D a shot. So I made a deal.
If they played through one of my Dungeons, then I would learn how to play Magic.
So I set out in making a dungeon, learning the rules, and teaching everyone how to play. We had a group of 4 go in and they ran it. They killed the boss at the end and had so much fun they wanted more. So I made another dungeon for them to play. They tore through that one too, and the next thing I know, I'm writing a full-fledged campaign for these dudes to run through. A couple months pass, we finish that campaign, and they're having so much fun with it. I never learned how to play Magic.
A couple more months pass, we're all hardcore D&D players now. We set out on a big project. We made an entire world to play in, and the above map is that world we made. I drew it up. I'm so happy with how it turned out, we got it printed up 46" and hung on the wall in our D&D room.
After we made the map, we divided up each continent among our players. We picked which continent we wanted to DM, named it, and started writing campaigns for each of them. I picked Runica's landmass. The next pic I upload will be a Runica map in detail, actually.
The light grey splotches are temperate forests, dark grey are rainforests. There's large masses of desert in places too but those aren't on this map. We tried to make it accurate, with how wind patterns shape land and build forests and such. Tectonic plates and all that too.
That is a great map. don't think we ever made a map. Then again, we never had a good cartographer. And the one we were escorting for a quest sort of died before we started.
If you like the d20 system, I highly recommend getting the original 3rd edition. It's vastly superior to 3.5, especially if you stick with the core books. Also, the Kalamar setting is definitely worth checking out, especially the Atlas
Go to Google+ and get in on the online community -- there's a game for every preference all the time. That'll at least get you feet wet. The other option is to find a comic store/game store in your community and see if they have gaming groups (or start your own).
As a lover of cartography and fantasy worlds, the design of this interests me greatly. I love the examplary amounts of detail into giving the shorelines some roughness as if they've really been pounded by intense waves over a long period of time as.
Also, your naming conventions used here sound pretty awesome. Though they hardly sound like they're from consistent culture, but given it's a whole world we're talking about, I'm certain you have lots of different cultures clashing with conventions.
